HAFENKÜCHE + SPREEBOOTE: RUMMELSBURG

AHOY! Last week I headed to the neighborhood of Rummelsburg right on Berlin's iconic Spree. Within several train stops outside of the center of Berlin, you're quickly in a much calmer and relaxing place. I immediately felt like I was on vacation somewhere new. I went to check out Hafenküche which is located right on the banks of the Spree with the harbor at it's doorstep. The main restaurant has a great German and international menu with plenty to fill you up before an afternoon on the water.  I ordered the spinach and goat cheese salad (also with pomegranate seeds... genius) along with the zucchini soup and bread basket. The portions are hefty and definitely a substantial amount to hold you over. The restaurant is super cozy with a fire place in the middle and traditional blue checkered napkins. Next door is the Hafenkante where the biergärten is. When the weather allows it, it's the perfect spot to bring a big group of friends for some burgers and beer. In the cooler months, there is an awesome fire pit in the middle of the terrace to hang out around. When you go, you absolutely have to order the "bretzel"- it was filled with a warm buttery inside and hands down the best one I've ever tried. They offer more gourmet options like fish and salads, but also your traditional curry or bratwursts! It's a great spot to sit and admire the boats go by, take in the fresh air, and learn how to say things like  "moin moin," to really get in the nautical spirit.

Downstairs from the HafenKüche is Spreeboote where you can rent a boat to ride around the river on. There are 10 different, and I must add incredibly chic, boats to choose from. During the warmer months, from April to October, you can enjoy riding around on the boats. Not only can you spend an afternoon on them but you also don't have to worry about food! You can order a picnic pre made for the boat ride, or a grill and beverage boxes from the harbor kitchen. You have the option of motor boats, picnic boats, electric boats, and even pedal boats, and stand up paddle boards. You can also request a skipper to handle the boat for you!
