A WEEKEND IN THE FRENCH BEAUJOLAIS WINE REGION

France is a country that never ceases to surprise me. Just when I thought I had seen it all- the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Chateaus in Loire, chalk cliffs of Étretat and the brilliant villages alongside the Mediterranean- I discovered the Beaujolais region. Just a bit northwest of Lyon, Beaujolais is a region notorious for its rolling hills, vineyards, romantic and charming villages, castles, and the most picturesque landscapes.

We stayed at the lovely Le Clos des Anges, a beautiful 16th century Bed and Breakfast in Bagnols. The delightful B&B was once a farmhouse which was recently remodeled. The blending of Moroccan design and French elements curate the eclectic charm, where every piece of furniture tells a story. The rooms were all incredibly spacious, lit with warm and romantic lighting, and with views over the private courtyard and the shaded garden.

My favorite part about staying at B&B's is sharing breakfast together with guests from around the world. On top of  enjoying local juices, yogurts, bread straight from the nearby boulangerie, we were fortunate enough to hear stories from fellow travelers. I loved the slow and relaxing mornings there and the emphasis put on meal time. Afterward we set out for a long jog along the paths that surround the property. We jogged past meadows with cows grazing, along paths through thick forest, and through vineyards with scenic views for as far as the eye could see. Each enchanting village we went through was overflowing with charm. After our afternoons exploring we would take a swim in the indoor heated pool and relax in the Turkish Hammam.

We were invited to a wedding in a neighboring village by an old friend from college. Being a romantic, I can't say I have ever seen anything more fanciful. French dainty Hors d'oeuvres, a hillside chateau with views of a medieval castle, and elegant fashion straight out of a Vogue catalogue. We found ourselves still eating dinner almost near midnight (the French wouldn't have it any other way.) The wedding was dripping in elegance and an unforgettable experience. The friendly people, culture, cuisine, and demeanor, exceeded all of my expectations.
